Introduction

Purebred Angus and Hereford cattle are bred and raised at Michigan State University to provide students with work experience in breeding, feeding, management and merchandising of quality beef cattle as well as furnish examples of high performance modern type cattle for selection and evaluation courses. Each year over 700 hundred students are enrolled in classes utilizing cattle from this unit. The herd also provides an opportunity to demonstrate breeding programs for genetic improvement of seedstock. Recommended feeding and management programs including artificial insemination, embryo transfer and ultrasound carcass evaluation are used. Applied research trials are conducted using cattle produced in this herd. The cattle that are produced in this herd that are not required for classroom instruction, outreach and research are merchandized by private treaty as well as consignment sales. Each year a few cattle are exhibited at a limited number of state and national shows. Students are involved in all phases of these activities.
